Editing Item Unit of Measure and Unit Cost

When the division uses multiple units of measure, you are able to add or edit the unit/units of measure for an item.

Important: When the division does not allow multiple units of measure, the system default unit of measure is automatically applied to the item. Another unit of measure cannot be added to the item. Additionally, the item default unit of measure cannot be edited or deleted from the item.

How to Add a Unit of Measure

You may add a unit of measure to an item from the Edit Item form. For more information on this process, see "Item Unit of Measure".

How to Edit an Item Unit of Measure

Note: To edit a unit of measure, the division must use multiple units of measure.

Important: If an item-unit of measure is added to inventory, the unit of measure-each count for the item CANNOT be changed.

The steps below outline how to edit an item's unit of measure.

  1. A unit of measure for an item may be added, changed or removed at the Units of Measure tab at the Edit Item form for that item. Click the Units of Measure tab to bring this portion of the Edit Item form to the front.

  1. To edit a unit of measure, click the Edit icon for this unit of measure.Edit icon
  2. The unit of measure entry is placed into Edit mode.

  1. The Unit of Measure, the Each Count, and the Unit Cost fields become active.
    1. Unit of Measure: place the cursor in this field; a drop-down arrow appears. Click the drop-down arrow and select a new unit of measure from the list that appears.
    2. Each Count: place the cursor in this field and enter a new each count.
    3. Unit Cost: place the cursor in this field and enter a new unit cost.

Note: When your system tracks the cost for an item, the unit cost is automatically entered in this field during a receipt, return, or receive transaction. If the unit cost needs adjusted, it may be changed manually and saved for the item.

Warning: Be aware that if you manually edit the unit cost for a track cost item, it will affect the unit cost going forward. Please see "Cost Tracking" for more information about how cost tracking is implemented and how the unit cost is updated / calculated for an item.

  1. To save any changes to this information, select the Save icon for this unit of measure.Save icon (Click the Clear icon to discard any changes.)
    1. If the item unit of measure-each count is found in inventory, a message prompt appears: The item unit of measure is in use and cannot be changed. Click Ok to close this message prompt. You are returned to the Item form\Unit of Measure tab; the unit of measure and-or the each count remain unchanged.
      1. Any valid updates to this unit of measure-each count are saved.
    2. The unit cost change is saved.

How to Delete a Unit of Measure

Note: When the division does not allow multiple units of measure, the default unit of measure is applied to the item and it cannot be deleted from the item.

Important: When a unit of measure is in use, it CANNOT be deleted.

When a division uses multiple units of measure, a unit of measure may be removed from an item if it is not in use.

  1. To delete a unit of measure for an item at the Edit Item form, click the Delete icon to the right of the entry.Delete Icon
  2. A warning prompt appears asking you to confirm deleting the item unit of measure. Click OK to delete the unit of measure.

  1. If the unit of measure is not in use, it is deleted from the UOM list at the Edit Item form.
  2. If the unit of measure is in use, a message prompt appears to notify you that the unit of measure is in use and cannot be deleted. Press Ok to close the prompt. You are returned to the Item form\Unit of Measure tab. The UOM remains.
